Since coming to north Queensland from the Darling Downs in the 1960s Sylvia has been inspired by the tropical landscape for her art. A freelance fine artist Sylvia is formally trained and her practice extends to industrial design for seating - “Lazy Days” in Kirwan, sculptures for Strand Ephemera - “Lamingtons” and “Beach Bundles”; “Iron Maiden” Thuringowa River Festival as well as whimsical works commissioned by the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery for exhibitions Walk this Way, Perc’s Purses and Vestments.

She has also been invited to judge several art competitions in north Queensland including Cairns 60th, Ernest Henry Memorial Art Competition Cloncurry and Hinchinbrook Art Awards, Ingham.
Essentially a plein air painter Sylvia is widely travelled, criss crossing Australia in search of subjects. She is well known for colourful descriptions of north Queensland rainforests and desert landscapes in gouache and acrylic. Her work is much sort after and held in private and public, national and international collections including Townsville’s Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, James Cook University, Artbank, Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon Trust and Tomsk Regional Museum Russia
An Art Studio Residency with Red Gate Gallery Beijing in 2007 was a good career move for Sylvia as her new work was selected for showing at Pickle Art Gallery China as well as the OlympicFineArt2008 Exhibition Beijing. An invitation for an individual exhibition of Australian Landscapes was held at the Regional Art Museum Tomsk Russia in 2008 as well as a solo show at Framed the Darwin Gallery. In July this year Sylvia Ditchburn Fine Art Gallery at Metro Quays, 86 Ogden St, Townsville opened.
‘My work is about capturing a sense of place and Australia is a country full of colour and wonder’.
